How Do I Find an Agent as an Actor?

A common question in the acting world is: “How do I find an agent?”

ActorsQ is a Dutch agency. At the bottom of this page, you can read how we work.

Here is a list of agencies: Dutch agencies for actors.

What Does an Agency Do?

What exactly does an agency do? Most agents work for professional talents such as actors, writers, and directors who are too busy to handle negotiations and administrative tasks themselves (or prefer to leave it to someone else). Agents have built a network with producers, writers, and directors, allowing them to provide input early in the production process about which actors are available and suitable for specific projects.

Not every actor graduating from the theatre academy, or other theatre schools, can make a living solely from acting. There are far more actors than are needed for theatre shows, feature films, TV series, and streaming productions. Many end up working as directors, producers, theatre teachers, or in entirely different fields such as marketing or home care. Very few actors are employed full-time as they used to be. Nowadays, actors move from one project to another, if they are lucky.

That is why agencies focus on the best, most motivated, and in-demand talents, but there are also opportunities for emerging actors.

Professional Actor

Are you an actor currently attending or having completed a full-time theatre program? Most agents are open to being approached by you, although many agencies may already be full. After all, an agent can only manage a certain number of actors within the available time each week.

Professional actors are represented by Acteursbelangen, which advocates for their rights. On the Acteursbelangen website, you can find a comprehensive list of recognized agencies, a very useful overview. While a theatre education is often the standard route, it is also possible to become a professional actor without formal training, provided you work hard and gain experience.

If you are a professional actor but not yet a member of Acteursbelangen, sign up immediately. Being recognized as an ACT member comes with clear advantages. This group regularly appears in theatre, on TV, in streaming productions, and in cinemas.

No agent yet? Perhaps you’ve never felt the need for one, or it may come down to your presentation. Review your showreel, casting photos, and CV with a colleague to ensure you’re presenting yourself in the best possible way.

Semi-Professional Actor

Many actors also work in related fields such as entertainment or training while remaining active as semi-professional actors. As a semi-professional, you may also be welcomed by Acteursbelangen, depending on your previous work. Applications are reviewed by a commission, so make sure your materials are well-prepared and present yourself at your best to increase your chances of being accepted into this esteemed group.

Once accepted, more agents may be open to considering you for their agency. This group is often seen in commercials and sometimes in smaller TV and film roles.

No agent yet? That makes sense, as semi-professionals are not the primary target group for agencies. However, if you present yourself exceptionally well, with a strong showreel, high-quality casting photos, and a convincing CV, you can still have a chance. Focus especially on casting agencies, make sure you’re registered everywhere, and keep your materials up to date.

Other Actors

Next, we have the largest group of actors: those who do not yet earn a living from acting and are not enrolled in a full-time program. Acting is, of course, a lot of fun, and it’s great that so many people enjoy it.

This group includes highly skilled actors who have already performed impressive roles in open-air theatres or even films, but are mainly seen in local theatre groups, as extras, or in commercials.

No agent yet? That’s normal, you don’t need one yet. Focus first on developing your talent. Take classes, workshops, or attend a school like De Nederlandse Acteursschool, where you can learn from experienced professionals. This is not only educational but also a great way to meet new people and expand your network.

Gain experience through performance and gather materials to build a showreel. Talk to other actors (from previous workshops or on social media) who have more experience than you. Ask them how they approached their goals in the field and what their “do” and “don’t” advice would be. Have professional casting photos taken (they don’t need to be expensive) and register with casting agencies, who knows, you might land a commercial soon!

How ActorsQ Works

ActorsQ is a boutique agency, which means we deliberately stay small. We focus on representing a select group of talent (rather than large numbers), who are members of Acteursbelangen, De Acteurs Gilde, and/or have international ambitions and are registered with Spotlight. Only talents affiliated with Acteursbelangen and De Acteurs Gilde are listed on our website (the rest are on Spotlight).

ActorsQ offers a personal and intensive approach. Actors joining a boutique agency usually receive a more customized career plan, direct communication, and a closer relationship with their agents. This exclusivity allows us to provide a higher level of commitment than larger, more general agencies.
